File this one under reasons why you should hire a reputable fire protection services company instead of shopping on price: recently the owner of Atlas Fire Protection in Norfolk, VA was arrested and charged with failure to perform testing in accordance with approved standards. According to the news report on Wavy.com, Atlas offered prices way under the normal cost for most fire protection systems inspections. However, says Norfolk Fire-Rescue Battalion Chief Harry Worley, the business owner confessed to “just putting stickers on the bottles and sending them out again.”

So what exactly did this guy do?

If you’ve been thinking about upgrading your building’s fire alarm system, you’ve probably come across the terms “addressable fire alarms” and “conventional fire alarms”. You may even already know the difference between the two: that conventional fire alarms are all wired to the same control panel, so if one goes off they all go off, whereas addressable fire alarms give each individual alarm unit (smoke detectors, heat detectors, pull stations, etc) its own unique address so you can see exactly which unit is going off at any time. So the only question left is, which type of fire alarm is best for your building?

As effective as a well-maintained fire sprinkler is at keeping your building safe from fires, there may come a time when the sprinkler isn’t enough. When this happens, is your building ready for fire department intervention? Your building should have inlets along one of the outside walls labeled“fire department connections.” Fire department connections allow the fire department to hook up one of their pumpers to your fire sprinklers, providing you with more pressure and water than your pump can deliver. They are especially useful if there has recently been some interruption to the city water supply due to storms or other such events.
