Fire Protection Company Owner Arrested in Norfolk, VA

Written on January 27th, 2012 | Fire Safety Tips

File this one under reasons why you should hire a reputable fire protection services company instead of shopping on price: recently the owner of Atlas Fire Protection in Norfolk, VA was arrested and charged with failure to perform testing in accordance with approved standards. However, says Norfolk Fire-Rescue Battalion Chief Harry Worley, the business owner confessed to “just putting stickers on the bottles and sending them out again.”

Beware of Fire Inspection Scams!

Written on December 16th, 2011 | Fire Inspections,Fire Safety Tips

Most people have been targeted by (and some people may have fallen prey to) scammers in the past, but this is a new low. They come into your building, putz around for a while, then leave you with a bill for a few hundred dollars. The damages from fire inspection scams hit you twice – not only did you waste a bunch of money, but your fire protection system didn’t get inspected, meaning it could have some damage you’re not aware of!

The Dangers of an Outdated Fire Suppression System

Written on November 23rd, 2011 | Fire Suppression Systems,Kitchen Fire Suppression Systems

One of the biggest risks of owning a restaurant is not financial – it’s the risk of having an obsolete fire suppression system! Having an out-of-date fire suppression system can cost you big time – just ask the owner of a Massachusetts restaurant that burned down six years ago! Since he failed to upgrade his fire suppression system, not only did the system not activate, allowing the fire to spread and consume his whole business, but it also disqualified him from collecting insurance benefits (the owner was even required to return a $15,000 cash advance from the insurance company!).

So what exactly did this guy do?

Addressable Fire Alarms vs. Conventional Fire Alarms

Written on October 31st, 2011 | Uncategorized

If you’ve been thinking about upgrading your building’s fire alarm system, you’ve probably come across the terms “addressable fire alarms” and “conventional fire alarms”. You may even already know the difference between the two: that conventional fire alarms are all wired to the same control panel, so if one goes off they all go off, whereas addressable fire alarms give each individual alarm unit (smoke detectors, heat detectors, pull stations, etc) its own unique address so you can see exactly which unit is going off at any time. So the only question left is, which type of fire alarm is best for your building?

Basic Info About Your Fire Department Connections (FDCs)

Written on October 24th, 2011 | Fire Protection

As effective as a well-maintained fire sprinkler is at keeping your building safe from fires, there may come a time when the sprinkler isn’t enough. When this happens, is your building ready for fire department intervention? Your building should have inlets along one of the outside walls labeled“fire department connections.” Fire department connections allow the fire department to hook up one of their pumpers to your fire sprinklers, providing you with more pressure and water than your pump can deliver. They are especially useful if there has recently been some interruption to the city water supply due to storms or other such events.
