About Fire Prevention Week
In 1925, President Calvin Coolidge proclaimed Fire Prevention Week a national observance in hopes of teaching people how to stay safe in case of a fire. Fire Prevention Week is observed each year during the week of October 9th in memory of the 1871 Great Chicago Fire. This year, Fire Prevention Week campaign is “Look. Listen. Learn. Be aware. Fire can happen anywhere.” This campaign works to educate people about the three necessary steps to take to reduce the likelihood of a fire:
- Look – Look for places a fire could start. Identify potential fire hazards and take care of them safely.
- Listen – Listen for the sound of a smoke alarm. Get outside to safety as soon as you hear the alarm sound.
- Learn – Learn two ways out of every room and make sure all doors and windows leading outside open easily and are free of clutter.
As experienced safety professionals, Confires urges you to bring these three basic lessons into your organization. Although our fire protection systems are state-of-the-art, nothing beats your instinct and ability to react to danger quickly.

The Importance of Fire Prevention
In a fire, mere seconds can mean the difference between a safe escape and real danger. Fire safety education is important for everyone—not just children. Since fires continue to occur in our facilities and on work sites, it shows we still have a lot to learn regarding fire prevention.
Planning is key when it comes to fire safety in the workplace, and it’s imperative to have a reliable fire protection plan in place for your work facility. This fire protection plan includes an account of all potential fire hazards, procedures to prevent those fires, and plans for employee fire safety training. A quality fire prevention plan is one that focuses on anticipating and preventing all potential fires from occurring. After all, the best way to keep everyone safe from fires is not to let them start in the first place.
