Importance of Fire Extinguisher Inspections
Far too often, business owners purchase fire extinguishers and mount them to the wall without ever thinking about them again. While installing fire extinguishers is a good first step (and an important one for meeting fire safety regulations) it’s not enough.
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) requires businesses to pursue annual fire extinguisher inspections from a qualified professional. Paired with monthly fire extinguisher inspections you can complete on your own, these preventative inspections serve to keep your fire extinguishers in good working condition so you can count on them at a moment’s notice if you or an employee needs to take action against a rogue blaze.
Fire Extinguisher Inspections: What to Expect
When you hire Confires to inspect your fire extinguishers, a professional arrives at your door ready to provide a quick yet thorough inspection. Contrary to popular thought, an annual inspection doesn’t involve testing the fire extinguisher. This only happens every five to twelve years.
Here’s what you can expect a technician to do during a fire extinguisher inspection:
- Verify proper placement of your fire extinguishers. In general areas, they should be placed every 75 feet of travel. A fire extinguisher should also be placed within 30 feet of cooking equipment in commercial kitchens.
- Ensure proper fire extinguisher installation in a conspicuous location that isn’t obstructed by furniture or other objects. Every fire extinguisher must be easily accessible, and the inspector checks for this.
- Inspect the fire extinguishers themselves. Ensure all labels are legible and that the pressure dial points to the green, indicating a full charge. Check the hose, pull pin and body of the fire extinguisher for any visible damage.
- Write the date on the tag to keep track of when to schedule another inspection one year from now.
